ASA Staffing Index Monthly Report, May 2019

Staffing jobs for the week of May 6–12 grew 0.9% from the prior week, according to the ASA Staffing Index, marking the first time the index has registered a rounded value of 95 so far this year. Temporary and contract staffing employment was 2.2% lower than the same week last year, which was an all-time high index reading (97) for the 19th week of the year. Although down from peaks reached around this time last year, the index remains just above the average for the prior four years.

The ASA Staffing Index four-week moving average edged up but held at a rounded figure of 94. Staffing employment for the four weeks ending May 12 was 2.9% lower than the same period in 2018.

 This week, containing the 12th day of the month, will be used in the May monthly employment situation report that will be issued by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on June 7.

The ASA Staffing Index is reported nine days after each workweek, making it a near real-time measure of staffing employment trends. ASA research shows that staffing employment is a coincident economic indicator.
